Attendance Policy:
Parents, it is very important that your child is at school each and every day. It is also important that they report on time. If your child reports to school after 8:25 a.m. they must report to the Office for a late pass. When your child/children are going to be absent on any given day please call Mrs. Vizcarra at 760-1693. Please send a note with your child on the day they return to school explaining the absence. Attached is the Flint Community Schools Elementary Schools Attendance Policy from the Code of Student Conduct
2001-2002

We realize that students occassionally will have a reason to be absent from school. However, these occurrences should be the exception rather than the rule. The following procedures will be used when dealing with absences:

1. After three absences from school, the teacher will notify the parent by phone or mail of the absences.

2. The teacher will notify the principal in writing when a student has eight absences. The principal will then send a written notice of the attendence concerns to the parent.

3. After 13 absences the parent and the school personnel will have a conference concerning the student's attendance problem. The parent will be informed, at that time, of the possibility of an educational neglect petition being filed if the attendance problem is not corrected.

4.Should a student continue to be absent, the school will initiate the truancy/educational neglect petition.

Each school will develop an incentive program to recognize and promote good attendence.

Discipline:
Wilkins Community Schools students are expected to adhere to the school-wide rules and regulations at all times. All students that misbehave will be given a warning. There will be additional consequences issued for repeated offenses such as detention, class closure or suspension. The following offenses are considered zero tolerance and will result in your child being suspended: fighting, stealing, sexual harrassement, bringing a weapon on school grounds and gross disrespect. Your child's teacher will be in contact with you if any behavioral problems arise with your child. Please discuss the above consequences with your child and explain why it is important to follow the rules. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Detention:
The after-school detention program at Wilkins School is held Monday through Thursday from 3:10 to 3:45 p.m. in the Upper Elementary Wing of the building. The program is designed to enhance our attendance as well as remedy negative behavior among the students. The administrator or teacher may assign a student to detention based on certain infractions. You will be notified prior to your child serving his/her detention time. If your child fails to report to detention or adhere to the detention rules, then their classes will be closed and he/she will be suspended. We will discuss character building at the initial phase of detention and then the students will sit quietly and focus on ways to improve their behavior. Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Box Tops for Education:
Please continue to clip your box tops for education from cereal and other food items. This fundraiser helps the students at Wilkins School.

School-Safety, Fire drills, and Disaster Drills:
We understand the concerns parents have for the safety of their children while they are at school. We are in the process of revising our Safety Plan to make it more beneficial and productive for our students and staff. We will also be periodically holding evacuation drills, disaster drills, fire drills and tornado drills so that students will be prepared in the event of a real emergency. If you have any concerns or questions please feel free to call the school at 760-1693.

Medicine Procedures:
If it is necessary for the school to administer medicine to a student during school hours than certain procedures must be followed. The parent must fill out a medical consent form (these form are available in the office) which lists the type of medicine, the dosage, and at what time it should be given. The medicine must be in its original container with the label from the pharmacy which lists the doctors name and instructions for the medicine. If the medicine is not a prescription such as Tylenol, cough syrup, etc. than we must have a note from the doctor to dispense the medicine. The secretary will dispense the medicine at the requesed time. For more details please see Mrs. Vizcarra.

Phone Usage:
Students are not allowed to use the phone in the main office. The only exception to this rule is for illness or an emergency. Parents, please give your children directions regarding after school plans in the morning.
